Little Caesar (1931)

A man is shot in Little Caesar but since it's a movie from 1931 his death is portrayed by his shadow.

Was gonna have this review just say “Pizza Pizza” but then they ordered spaghetti and coffee. Then Rico opened up the paper and started fawning over a headline about the underworld mourning a dead mafioso, to which his friend says “what’s that got to do with the price of eggs” because it’s the fucking Great Depression, to which Rico says “everything,” and hoo boy is he right, as much about his own time as ours.

Watching this exchange after a deluge of information from the Epstein Files hit the internet, showing how interconnected the lurid details of Epstein’s life and inner circle are with global political projects is a fucking gut punch, man. You can see, besides decency, why the powerful might want a production code that would take the sting out of these sensationalistic little social commentary films. The film kinda tapers down to Robinson’s performance after that, not nearly giving enough to Kid Bean, so, ahem, Pizza Pizza.
