(Partly Art) Partly Garbage

Okay, maybe not a thousand. Or at least definitely not all VHS tapes. But sometime last year, I quit my last streaming service and started collecting physical copies of films again. Other than movies I saw in a theater, my favorite 2024 viewing experiences were things scored around Durham or elsewhere: thrift stores, library sales, big boxes of random tapes purchased from eBay, swap meets, Craigslist, gifts, etc. I got a 13″ CRT with a built-in DVD player, thrifted a working VCR, and began picking through them, but not with any clear focus, and despite donating and selling a fair amount of what I brought in, I’m well and truly buried in media and am now gonna try to dig myself out in less-than-efficient fashion.

My real start as a writer of any merit was as a movie blogger, and just about every year since I stopped I’ve thought about getting back into it. I’m gonna give it an earnest shot this year, and will be doing so while getting through as many of my tapes, DVDs, and blu-rays as I can. Every week, I’ll be posting a column called 1000 Tapes, where I’m going to write about the movies I watch in a week, all on physical media. I don’t leave many movies unfinished, but it’s a big pile of stuff and I’d like to move through it quickly, so if I bail on a tape that’s just footage of a C&O Railroad train chug-a-chug-a-choo-chooing through the scenic plains of 1980s Nebraska, I’ll let you know how much of it I could stand, why I quit, and so on. I’ll also let you know which films end up in my permanent collection, which is, given the limitations of space, extremely high praise.

The list below is not complete, just what’s laying around my room at the moment, but 429 pieces of media felt like a good start. Beyond what came in random lots, which you can probably take a guess at, I got most of these intending to watch them, which feels absurd now that I’ve spent a few days pecking out the list. A lot of rewatches, a lot of favorites hoarded against their eventual disappearance from streaming or an eventual 4K restoration that fucks something up. There’s plenty of things on this list that I know I’m keeping, but who knows — maybe this is the year I get tired of watching Bloodsport on my birthday.

Over the next week, I’ll add a page detailing the movies that’ve already made the permanent collection, as well as a page of tapes and DVDs I’m selling at a reasonable price. Unreasonably priced stuff will go on eBay. If I manage to keep this up, who knows — maybe we can watch kung-fu tapes together on Twitch.
